Formation and Early Days

The story of Guns N' Roses began in 1985 in Los Angeles when members of two bands, Hollywood Rose and L.A. Guns, joined forces to create a new rock powerhouse. The initial lineup included Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Tracii Guns, Ole Beich, and Rob Gardner. However, as with many bands, early lineup changes led to the formation of the classic lineup that would define their sound—Axl Rose, Slash, Izzy Stradlin, Duff McKagan, and Steven Adler.

Their relentless performances in the gritty LA club scene quickly garnered them a passionate following. Playing in iconic venues like The Troubadour and The Roxy, their raw, untamed energy captured the attention of major record labels. In 1987, they signed with Geffen Records and released their debut album, Appetite for Destruction. Fueled by smash hits like "Sweet Child O' Mine," "Welcome to the Jungle," and "Paradise City," the album skyrocketed to success, ultimately becoming one of the best-selling rock albums of all time. This breakthrough catapulted Guns N' Roses to global superstardom, cementing their place in rock history and setting the stage for an unforgettable career.

As the band’s popularity grew, so did their reputation for being unpredictable and wild, both on and off the stage. They embodied the rebellious rock and roll lifestyle, often making headlines for their wild antics, feuds, and passionate performances. Despite the controversies, their music spoke for itself. Appetite for Destruction was not just an album—it was a cultural phenomenon, defining an era and capturing the raw intensity of late '80s rock. Their meteoric rise proved that rock music was far from fading and that a new generation was ready to embrace its unfiltered energy.

Izzy Stradlin – Rhythm guitar, backing vocals. A key songwriter and founding member who played a major role in shaping the band's gritty and blues-infused sound. His contributions to the band’s songwriting were instrumental in crafting some of their biggest hits, even though he left the band in the early ‘90s.

Duff McKagan – Bass, backing vocals. With his punk rock influences and driving bass lines, Duff brought an aggressive edge to the band's music. His experience in the punk scene gave Guns N' Roses a raw, rebellious feel that set them apart from other hard rock acts of the time.

Steven Adler – Drums (later replaced by Matt Sorum). His energetic drumming was crucial in defining the band’s classic sound before his departure. Adler’s loose, groove-driven drumming style helped create the unique swing that made their early music so infectious.

Despite the lineup changes, the core essence of Guns N’ Roses has remained strong. Even with different musicians stepping in over the years, the band has continued to push forward, creating new music and delivering explosive live performances that remind fans why they fell in love with them in the first place.

Interviewer:
It's been eight years since you've been back with Guns N' Roses. Yeah, it's unbelievable. 2016, I'm at Soldier Field. My brother Sam, whose birthday is actually today, he took this picture at the show. And I just thought it was just the perfect picture of you, Duff and Axel, back together. And it was like, it just felt, when I saw you and Axel next to each other, after all those years, it felt so good. And it's like, there has to be, like, when you, for 20, however long you weren't in Guns N' Roses, you would, was it 20 years? You would do an interview and everyone, you know, you'd be talking about whatever, and then they'd be like, well, what about Guns N' Roses, blah, blah. And there has to be relief now that you're doing Guns N' Roses, and now you could do awesome things like Orgy of the Dam, the Serpent Tour, you could do anything, like you do everything now, it must feel so good for you.

Slash:
Yeah, no, it was great to, I mean, God, there was, it's a long story, but it was great when Axel and I started talking again, and then, you know, because I missed him, you know, but we had so much, it developed so much animosity that we just, it just got worse and worse as time went on. So we finally spoke and started talking about playing. God, it was, it was a huge kind of, like, weight lifted off of our shoulders and, and, and it was just, and it was exciting, you know, to get back together. And there was that, that chemistry that happens that you sort of forget about, you know, how intense that is when you get on stage together, or it's just working together. So yeah, it was, it's really cool. I'm really happy that we managed to get past all that.
